If you’re thinking about California beach engagement photos, first of all… you can’t really go wrong! The coastline here just does its thing. The light hits different, the air feels softer, and everything naturally feels romantic without trying too hard. Almost all of these sessions happened at sunset when that golden light shows up and makes everyone glow, but I’ll say this now: sunrise is seriously underrated and just as beautiful. If you’re stuck between a few beaches and wondering which one actually fits your vibe, let me break down three of my favorites in a way that actually helps!

Zuma is what I suggest when couples tell me, “We want to be barefoot and not worry about anything.” It’s wide, open, and you’re not squeezed between rocks or cliffs. You have space to run, sit, lay in the sand, splash around, and just be playful. It doesn’t feel dramatic. It feels free. This is the beach where you don’t have to think too much! The light at sunset spreads across the whole shoreline, so everything looks soft and glowy without us having to chase it. If you’re picturing wind in your hair and laughing while a wave almost knocks you over, Zuma is your spot.
What to know:

El Matador is a whole different mood. The cliffs, the rocks, the little tucked-away spots, it feels adventurous in the best way. When the sun starts dropping behind those rock formations, it creates layers of light that make everything feel intimate and emotional. This is for the couple who wants that slightly dramatic, windswept, “we’re in our own world” kind of energy. Just know there’s a staircase and short sandy walk to get down there, so we plan for that. It’s worth it, but it’s not the roll-up-and-step-onto-the-sand kind of beach!
What to know:

Doheny has this sweet, nostalgic feel to it. It’s a little calmer, a little more open, and really easy to access. And this is where I’m going to strongly encourage you to bring something meaningful. A vintage car? Yes. A motorcycle? Also yes. Your dog? Always yes. This beach makes it easy to incorporate something personal without it feeling staged. You can pull into the lot, take your time, and build the session around it. It feels very Southern California without being flashy. Relaxed, coastal, and personal.
What to know:

Most people choose sunset, and I get it. The golden glow, the warm tones, the way the sky shifts colors, it’s dreamy for California Beach Engagement Photos. But sunrise is calm. Quiet. Way fewer people. The light is softer and more even. If you don’t love the idea of a crowd or you want something that feels more intimate and peaceful, morning sessions can be unreal. It just depends on your energy.

Here’s what I always tell couples planning a beach session:
And most importantly, your photos will feel the most like you when you stop trying to “do it right” and just lean into each other. The beach gives us the setting. The personal stuff, the car, the inside jokes, the way you hold hands, that’s what makes it meaningful!

If you’re dreaming about California Beach Engagement Photos and you’re not sure which beach feels the most like you two, I’ll help you figure it out!
