There’s something about a proposal that doesn’t go exactly according to plan that somehow makes it even more meaningful. This romantic Getty Villa proposal almost looked completely different. Joseph originally planned everything around the Getty Center, we had the location picked out, the timing figured out, the exact spot ready to go. But last minute, Laura wasn’t feeling up for the drive there, and suddenly the entire plan shifted. Instead of forcing it, Joseph pivoted. We all did. And honestly? It ended up unfolding in a way that felt even more personal, emotional, and real.
The Getty Villa ended up being the perfect backdrop for them. The warm stone architecture, the ocean peeking through the trees, the quiet little corners that feel straight out of a movie… it all matched the feeling of the moment so naturally. Nothing about this felt overly staged or polished. It felt intimate. Nervous. Exciting. Like two people fully inside one of the biggest moments of their lives!

One of my favorite things about this entire proposal was how human it felt. Joseph had spent so much time planning everything out, and then suddenly he had to adjust in real time without letting Laura suspect a thing. We were texting and rerouting on the fly, trying to figure out where we could make this happen once they arrived at the Getty Villa instead. The second I saw them walking through the space together, though, I knew it was going to work out exactly the way it was supposed to. Joseph was definitely nervous, you could feel it immediately, but in the sweetest way.
The kind of nervous where you can tell someone cares so deeply about getting this moment right. They wandered through the gardens and archways together until Joseph found the balcony overlooking the ocean and knew that was it. And honestly? The view was beautiful, but the emotion completely stole the show. Laura’s reaction, the way they immediately melted into each other afterward, the laughing and crying at the same time… those are the moments that make a proposal unforgettable. It stopped being about the original plan and became fully about them.

The Getty Villa really does have this dreamy, cinematic feeling to it. Between the long white corridors, the terracotta floors, the fountains, and those little glimpses of the ocean everywhere, it feels peaceful in a way that’s hard to explain until you’re there. It almost feels like stepping into another world for a couple of hours.
What I loved most about photographing Joseph and Laura here was how naturally they fit into the space. Nothing felt forced. They were just fully wrapped up in each other the entire time. Walking hand in hand through the colonnades, laughing through happy tears, stopping every few seconds because they couldn’t stop looking at the ring or kissing each other. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like quietly documenting whatever was unfolding between them.
The light that afternoon was also unreal. Soft, warm, glowy sunlight pouring into the hallways mixed with those bright ocean views made everything feel romantic without trying too hard. Even the little in-between moments, Laura fixing her hair while smiling at Joseph, the way he kept looking over at her like he couldn’t believe this was real yet, ended up feeling like some of my favorite images from the entire session.

If you’re thinking about planning your own proposal at the Getty Villa, let this be your reminder that things do not have to go perfectly to become incredibly meaningful. Sometimes the unexpected shifts end up making the story even better. The nerves, the improvising, the figuring-it-out-together energy… that’s the kind of stuff you actually remember later. And honestly, the Getty Villa is such an incredible place for a proposal if you want something that feels romantic, timeless, and cinematic without needing a ton of extra production. There are so many quiet corners, gorgeous architectural details, and ocean views that make the entire experience feel immersive from start to finish.
