There’s honestly such a big difference between showing up to your wedding day already comfortable in front of the camera versus having your wedding be the very first time you’re being photographed professionally together. That’s exactly why I always love recommending engagement sessions to my couples. John and Erin booked their session ahead of their wedding later this year not only for their save the dates. But also as a way to ease into the experience together before the big day. These Pasadena engagement photos at Arlington Garden. Ended up feeling so relaxed, romantic, and natural, the kind of session that reminds me why engagement photos matter so much beyond just having pretty images.

A lot of couples tell me before their session that they feel awkward in front of the camera or that they “don’t know what to do with their hands,” and honestly… That’s completely normal. Most people are not used to having a camera pointed at them for two hours while trying to look natural and connected. Engagement sessions create space to slow down and figure things out without the pressure or timeline of a wedding day hanging over you. It gives couples the chance to settle into each other instead of feeling like they need to perform.
With John and Erin, you could literally see the shift happen throughout the session. At the beginning, there were definitely a few nervous laughs and moments of trying to figure out where to stand, but by the end they were completely locked into each other. They stopped thinking about the camera and just focused on being together. That comfort and trust makes such a huge difference later on during a wedding because couples already know how I direct. How I photograph movement, and how the experience actually feels.

Arlington Garden ended up being the perfect location for the vibe they wanted. The entire space feels peaceful and tucked away, even though you’re still in Pasadena. There are so many winding little pathways, textured greenery, stone walkways, and soft natural backdrops that photograph beautifully without feeling overly curated or busy. It has this really quiet, intimate energy to it that works especially well for couples who want their session to feel relaxed and romantic rather than overly posed.
We photographed their session during golden hour using a mix of film and digital. Which gave everything this dreamy, cinematic feeling that fit the garden so perfectly. The soft light filtering through the greenery combined with the grain and texture from film made the gallery feel timeless in a really natural way. It never felt forced or overly styled. Just two people spending time together in a beautiful space while the sun slowly disappeared behind the trees. One thing couples should know if they’re considering Arlington Garden for their own Pasadena engagement photos. Is that professional photography does require a permit. Thankfully though, it’s very affordable and honestly completely worth it for how versatile and peaceful the location is. Sunset is especially beautiful there once the light softens and everything starts glowing.

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about engagement sessions is that they’re only for save the dates or Instagram photos. But honestly, the emotional side of them matters so much more. The session itself becomes part of your story together. It’s this intentional pause before the chaos of wedding planning and timelines fully takes over. You get to spend time together, slow down for a second, and actually experience being engaged instead of just planning a wedding.
For photographers, engagement sessions are also such an important opportunity to build trust with couples before the wedding day. By the time the wedding arrives, we already know how to work together, what feels natural to you. And how to create photos that actually feel like your relationship instead of stiff poses. It turns the wedding day into a continuation of that connection. Instead of feeling like we’re meeting for the first time under pressure. Watching John and Erin settle into the experience together throughout the evening was honestly my favorite part of the session. By the end, everything felt effortless in the best way. And that comfort they built during this session is going to make such a difference when their wedding day finally gets here later this year.

If you’re recently engaged and feeling nervous about being in front of the camera, I promise you are not alone. Engagement sessions are not about showing up already knowing exactly what to do, they’re about creating space to feel comfortable, connected, and fully yourselves before the wedding day arrives.
