An Intimate Big Bear Wedding at Sessions Retreat & Hotel

If you haven’t seen Sessions Retreat & Hotel yet, it’s quickly becoming one of the most unique wedding venues in Big Bear. The property blends vintage cabin beauty with a more modern, design-forward feel, creating a space that feels both elevated and approachable at the same time.

What I loved most about the venue was how well it matched Lucas and Dani’s vision for the day. Nothing felt overly formal or stuffy. The warm wood interiors, mountain setting, and cozy atmosphere created the perfect environment for guests to relax, connect, and actually enjoy the celebration. It felt like a weekend getaway with all of their favorite people rather than a traditional wedding. Which was exactly what they wanted.

A First Look That Didn’t Go According to Plan (In the Best Way)

One of my favorite moments from this intimate Big Bear wedding was their first look. The original plan was to meet at Big Bear Lake with the mountains and water as the backdrop. But when we arrived, we quickly realized the area was packed with a children’s baseball tournament and wasn’t quite the quiet setting we had envisioned.

Instead of forcing it, we pivoted and headed farther up the mountain. We eventually found a peaceful spot surrounded by towering pines and beautiful forest views. Looking back, it ended up being even better than the original plan. Dani was feeling all the nerves that naturally come with such a big day, but the second she saw Lucas. Everything changed. The nerves disappeared, the smiles came out. And it instantly became one of those moments that reminds you what the day is really about.

Why Film Photography Felt So Perfect for This Intimate Big Bear Wedding

Lucas and Dani were drawn to the more editorial side of my work from the beginning. Which made hybrid film and digital coverage a perfect fit for their wedding day. Sessions Retreat & Hotel already has such a nostalgic feel to it, and film photography complemented that atmosphere beautifully.

Throughout the day, I moved between film and digital cameras. Documenting everything from quiet moments in the forest to the energy of the dance floor later that night. Film brought an extra layer of texture and character to the gallery. While digital allowed me to capture all of the fast-moving moments as they unfolded. The result was a collection of images that felt timeless, candid, and true to the experience of the day.

And speaking of the dance floor, it absolutely delivered. From kids running around with glow sticks to guests packed shoulder to shoulder celebrating with Lucas and Dani, the energy never really slowed down. It was exactly the kind of celebration they had envisioned from the start: joyful, relaxed, and focused on making memories with the people they love most.
